SHINE to support Argonne and Case Western on high-throughput separation technology for fuel recycling
SHINE said it is collaborating with DOE's Argonne National Laboratory and Case Western Reserve University to apply chemical separation technology to the nuclear fuel recycling process it is developing, conducted through ARPA-E's CURIE Program with additional funding led by Case Western Reserve, where SHINE participates as a subcontractor. Argonne is developing equipment called PaCERS (Packed Centrifugal Equipment for Radiochemical Separation), which spins fast enough to generate centrifugal forces beyond ordinary gravity to increase chemical separation efficiency β a higher-throughput, lower-solvent approach. SHINE is working to apply PaCERS to separation processes including those recovering strontium-90 and americium-241 for medical, manufacturing and advanced power uses, and to minor actinide recovery. SHINE states spent nuclear fuel retains some 90% of its energy potential. No value for SHINE's subcontract was disclosed.
