SHINE to support Argonne and Case Western on high-throughput separation technology for fuel recycling

SHINE said it is collaborating with DOE's Argonne National Laboratory and Case Western Reserve University to apply chemical separation technology to the nuclear fuel recycling process it is developing, conducted through ARPA-E's CURIE Program with additional funding led by Case Western Reserve, where SHINE participates as a subcontractor. Argonne is developing equipment called PaCERS (Packed Centrifugal Equipment for Radiochemical Separation), which spins fast enough to generate centrifugal forces beyond ordinary gravity to increase chemical separation efficiency β€” a higher-throughput, lower-solvent approach. SHINE is working to apply PaCERS to separation processes including those recovering strontium-90 and americium-241 for medical, manufacturing and advanced power uses, and to minor actinide recovery. ORNL licenses four cryogenic pellet fueling inventions to Type One Energy for stellarator fuelling

Oak Ridge National Laboratory licensed a suite of four cryogenic pellet fueling inventions to Type One Energy under an agreement signed at the Nuclear Opportunities Workshop in Knoxville, Tennessee on 5 August 2026. The technologies form solid hydrogen pellets a few degrees above absolute zero and inject them at high speed into the plasma core, which is more effective than gas puffing and improves plasma performance. It extends an existing ORNL relationship that already covers a high-heat-flux test facility and a joint INFUSE programme project. ORNL Director Stephen Streiffer described it as moving fueling research out of the lab and into application; John Canik, Type One's Chief Science and Engineering Officer, called high-repetition reliable fuelling one of the most essential capabilities for a commercial plant.
