Pacific Fusion breaks ground on a $1bn Albuquerque campus and signs a public-private MOU with the NNSA

Pacific Fusion broke ground on a $1 billion Research & Manufacturing Campus at Mesa del Sol in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which will house its Demonstration System — designed to reach net facility gain by 2030 and to produce high-yield fusion bursts exceeding 100 megajoules, making it the only high-yield fusion facility under construction in the United States. The same day, the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration and Pacific Fusion announced a Memorandum of Understanding Regarding Collaboration on High Yield Fusion, High-Energy-Density Science and Related Technical Areas, signed by NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams and Pacific Fusion co-founder and CTO Keith LeChien. NNSA stressed the MOU is a framework only: specific projects and funding commitments require separate agreements. Federal, state and local leaders attended alongside investors including board member Eric Schmidt, and the company positioned the build explicitly against Chinese fusion investment.

SHINE selected for two DOE Genesis Mission projects applying AI to nuclear fuel recycling

SHINE said it was selected for the US Department of Energy's Genesis Mission, which the company describes as a more-than-$5-billion national initiative to double America's scientific output through AI. SHINE takes two roles: prime recipient on 'AI-Guided Fuel Cycle Facility Optimization', a Phase I project with Argonne National Laboratory as technical partner, and a contributing role on a second project. The lead project aims to produce an AI-enabled workflow letting engineers weigh performance, product quality and waste together when designing fuel recycling processes, building on two Argonne tools — AMUSE, which models separation chemistry, and ARTEMIS, which models full recycling facility layout — with a new AI layer co-developed with Argonne. Germany selects Biblis as the national site for its laser fusion hub, led by Focused Energy

Commonwealth Fusion Systems named first international partner in UKAEA's £220M LIBRTI tritium-breeding programme

On 1 July 2026 the UK Atomic Energy Authority announced that CFS will be the first international company to join LIBRTI (Lithium Breeding Tritium Innovation), a £220 million UK government initiative aiming to demonstrate net tritium production. CFS gains early access to a first-of-a-kind blanket-testing facility at UKAEA's Culham Campus, including a recently acquired high-flux neutron source. Tritium self-sufficiency — a plant breeding enough of its own fuel — is one of the hardest unsolved gates on fusion commercialisation, so access to representative blanket-test infrastructure addresses a specific critical-path risk rather than a general research interest. UKAEA framed the agreement as building on momentum from the King's Address to the U.S. Congress in April.

SHINE selected for advanced negotiations under DOE's Surplus Plutonium Utilization Program

SHINE said it was competitively selected by the US Department of Energy for advanced negotiations to convert surplus weapons-programme plutonium into fuel for advanced reactors, making it one of a small group entering negotiations under DOE's Surplus Plutonium Utilization Program, run by the Office of Nuclear Energy. Under its proposed approach SHINE would chemically process the material, recovering americium — a decay product that accumulates in stored plutonium — for radioisotope use, and purifying the remaining plutonium for blending with uranium into advanced reactor fuel. The plan pairs SHINE's fuel-cycle chemistry with americium-recovery work by partner Zeno Power and separation technology developed with French nuclear group Orano. Final terms remain subject to negotiation and an Other Transaction Agreement with DOE; no value was disclosed.

The U.S. Department of Energy approved Zap Energy's preconceptual Z-pinch fusion power plant design report milestone under the public-private Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program. The report describes the full range of systems needed to construct and operate a fusion power demonstration facility generating approximately 50 MW of net electrical output per module. CEO Zabrina Johal said the approval further validates the engineering case for the sheared-flow-stabilized Z-pinch and serves as a blueprint for its path to commercial fusion power. DOE issues conditional commitment for a loan of up to $263 million to complete the Chrysalis isotope facility

The US Department of Energy's Office of Energy Dominance Financing issued a conditional commitment for a loan of up to $263 million to fund completion of Chrysalis, SHINE's medical isotope production facility in Janesville, Wisconsin. DOE's own announcement names the borrower as SHINE Chrysalis, LLC — a project-level entity, not the parent. The financing, if approved, would support establishing the first domestic commercial supply of molybdenum-99, an isotope SHINE says is used in over 40,000 diagnostic procedures daily for heart disease and cancer. The company describes Chrysalis as the world's largest medical isotope production facility and the first deployment of new nuclear technology at this scale in decades.
