Rather than chasing one giant reactor, it aims to build prefabricated modules that can be assembled to power 'hard-to-decarbonize' industrial heat and electricity needs. The goal is fusion units competitive on cost with conventional fuels, offering industry a zero-carbon energy source.

SHINE Technologies is taking a step-by-step, revenue-generating path to fusion: rather than building a reactor first, it commercializes the underlying nuclear technology in stages — neutron testing for aerospace and defense components, producing medical isotopes for diagnostics and cancer treatment, recycling used nuclear fuel, and finally fusion energy. Each business funds the next and builds the industrial capability needed for power generation. The long-term goal is clean, abundant fusion electricity, reached by proving market value at every step rather than waiting for a single breakthrough.

TAE Technologies, founded in 1998, is pursuing a distinctive approach to commercial fusion power using hydrogen-boron fuel and a field-reversed-configuration plasma design, aiming for clean energy with the cleanest environmental profile. Its breakthroughs in particle accelerators have spun off two real businesses today: battery and e-mobility power management (TAE Power Solutions) and a precision cancer radiation therapy based on Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (TAE Life Sciences). 1X Technologies builds NEO, a humanoid robot designed for the home — a machine meant to handle everyday domestic tasks and learn from real households, sold direct to consumers. Unlike warehouse-focused rivals, 1X is aiming the humanoid form factor squarely at domestic life, the hardest and most valuable environment to automate. If safe, capable home robots become real, it would open a consumer market many times larger than industrial robotics — though doing chores reliably and safely around people remains the central unsolved challenge.

Agility Robotics makes Digit, which it describes as the first humanoid robot in production deployment, paired with a cloud platform called Arc that runs and coordinates fleets of them on facility floors. The pitch is industrial humanoid automation with clear ROI — robots doing mobile material-handling work in warehouses and factories today. The goal is to scale field-proven humanoids into a standard part of how facilities automate physical labor.

Apptronik builds Apollo, a general-purpose humanoid robot designed to work in spaces built for people — doing logistics and manufacturing tasks like trailer unloading, case picking, and palletizing, offered as robotics-as-a-service. Its CEO frames the race to build humanoids as 'the space race of our time.' The bet is that one human-shaped robot able to do thousands of different physical jobs could reshape labor in warehouses and factories facing chronic worker shortages — if the hardware and AI can match human dexterity and reliability at scale.

Cobot (Collaborative Robotics), founded by former Amazon robotics VP Brad Porter, builds autonomous mobile robots designed to work safely alongside people in warehouses, hospitals and airports — reacting to humans rather than being fenced off from them. Sanctuary AI builds Phoenix, an industrial-grade humanoid robot, paired with an AI control system the company calls Carbon that aims to give robots human-like understanding of tasks. Its mission is to deploy millions of humanoids to fill 'dull, dirty, or dangerous' jobs that an aging, shrinking workforce increasingly can't. The company's wager is that general-purpose humanoids are an inevitable answer to a worsening global labor crisis — provided the AI 'mind' can reach the dexterity and reasoning real work demands.

Skild AI is building what it calls an 'omni-bodied brain' — a single general-purpose AI model designed to control any robot for any task, rather than the one-robot-one-program approach that dominates robotics today. Its system learns dexterous real-world skills partly by watching human videos, a scalable answer to robotics' chronic shortage of training data, and is being deployed first in inspection and mobile-manipulation robots. If a truly general robot 'brain' works, it could do for physical machines what large language models did for text — turn robotics from bespoke engineering into a software platform any company can build on.

With the latest all-electric Atlas, the company is pushing toward humanoid robots that bring strength and autonomous intelligence into real industrial workspaces.

OpenAI is the AI lab behind ChatGPT, whose stated mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. Founded in 2015 as a nonprofit, it restructured in October 2025 so that the OpenAI Foundation (nonprofit) controls a public-benefit corporation, OpenAI Group PBC, which builds and sells its AI products while being legally required to advance the mission. As one of the defining players in the race toward ever-more-capable AI, its models, safety choices and governance shape the trajectory of the entire field.
