OpenAI publishes first measured results for JalapeΓ±o, its first custom inference chip: 1.5-1.9x more AI work per watt and 1.7-3.6x lower end-to-end latency than comparison systems

In a company engineering publication dated 25 Aug 2026, OpenAI released the first measured performance results for JalapeΓ±o, described as "OpenAI's first custom inference chip". Tested on InferenceX, "a public benchmark from SemiAnalysis", across GPT-OSS 120B, DeepSeek R1 670B and Kimi K2.5 1T, OpenAI reports JalapeΓ±o "delivered 1.5 to 1.9 times more AI work per watt at peak throughput and 1.7 to 3.6 times lower end-to-end latency than the comparison systems", and 2.1 to 4.1 times higher performance on highly interactive workloads. OpenAI states it plans "to begin deploying JalapeΓ±o within OpenAI's compute infrastructure by the end of the year" and that it is "the first generation of a multigenerational roadmap" with Gen 2 "deep in development". The chip was co-developed with Broadcom per OpenAI's earlier unveil publication. Material because it is working first-party silicon with measured third-party-benchmark results from the largest buyer of merchant AI accelerators, landing the day before Nvidia's quarterly print.

Anthropic reports Claude autonomously designed de novo protein binders against 14 of 15 targets, with hit rates above typical campaigns

Anthropic published a study in which Claude Opus 4.8 and a Mythos Preview model autonomously ran de novo protein-binder design campaigns, producing 1,320 designs of which 354 binders were confirmed against 14 of 15 targets, independently produced and tested by Adaptyv Bio and Twist Bioscience. Anthropic reported overall hit rates of 22.6% (Opus 4.8) and 26.7% (Mythos Preview), rising to 35.1% in single-target mode, versus the 10-15% it says is typical today.

OpenAI temporarily slowed frontier scaling: two-week pause in RL training and its largest planned frontier RL run still on hold after the Hugging Face incident and Astra's possible Critical cyber threshold

In a company publication dated 18 Aug 2026, OpenAI disclosed it "temporarily slowed the pace of scaling", including "a two-week pause in reinforcement learning (RL) training on our latest models intended for deployment", and stated "Our largest planned frontier RL run remains on hold". Two triggers are named: the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident, and preliminary evidence that its upcoming model Astra "may meet the Critical cybersecurity capability threshold under our Preparedness Framework" (determined 7 Aug). OpenAI says a significant number of Astra workloads remain paused, that the new standards "incurred great cost and delays to frontier research", and that it will evolve the Preparedness Framework.

Alphabet closes $25bn US dollar senior notes offering, taking 2026 debt raised past $45bn

On 10 August 2026 Alphabet closed an underwritten public offering of $25 billion of US dollar-denominated senior notes off its June 2026 Form S-3 shelf (File No. 333-296395), under the February 2016 BNY Mellon indenture. Ten tranches were issued: $750m floating rate due 2028, $1.25bn 4.500% due 2028, $500m floating rate due 2029, $2.0bn 4.625% due 2029, $3.5bn 4.875% due 2031, $2.5bn 5.200% due 2033, $4.5bn 5.450% due 2036, $3.0bn 6.250% due 2046, $4.5bn 6.375% due 2056 and $2.5bn 6.500% due 2066. Coupons of 6.25-6.50% at the long end are notably high for an AA-rated issuer and show the price of raising this much duration at once. Combined with the May euro, Canadian dollar and yen offerings (roughly $21bn) and the June $49.6bn net equity and mandatory convertible raise, Alphabet has taken in well over $95bn of external capital in four months, against a $40bn at-the-market equity programme still undrawn - the clearest single measure of what frontier AI infrastructure now costs.

OpenAI leans toward delaying IPO to 2027 after SpaceX's rocky public debut

Multiple outlets (NYT, corroborated by Reuters and Bloomberg, Jun 25) report OpenAI is now leaning toward holding its IPO until 2027 rather than late 2026, with advisers citing tech-stock volatility and SpaceX's weak first weeks as a newly public company. This pushes back the previously reported fall-2026 debut timeline for the most-watched AI IPO.
