Northrop Grumman announced its air-launched Pegasus rocket will fly an unprecedented rescue mission to raise the orbit of NASA's Swift gamma-ray burst observatory, launching as a rapid-response mission from Kwajalein Atoll. Swift was built at Northrop's Gilbert, Arizona facility and launched in 2004. The mission features a complete avionics upgrade to the vehicle. Pegasus was the world's first privately developed space launch vehicle; an air-launched profile means it is not tied to a single launch site. Not a big event: a mission announcement rather than an executed launch or a disclosed contract value.

Days after its Nasdaq debut, SpaceX submitted an FCC filing for permission to deploy up to 1 million large AI satellites (each ~230ft, ~120kW compute) to run orbital data centers, with demonstration launches targeted for late 2027 and deployment as early as 2028. The plan, central to folding xAI under SpaceX, frames the IPO proceeds as funding for a space-based compute build-out.

Northrop Grumman shipped the remaining solid rocket booster segments for NASA's Artemis III mission - the planned crewed lunar landing - following the successful Artemis II crewed flyby in April. The company describes its five-segment boosters as the most powerful human-rated motors ever built. Shipment of the final segments moves Artemis III hardware from manufacturing into stacking and integration, removing Northrop's booster production from the mission's critical path. Not a big event: a scheduled manufacturing and logistics milestone under an existing NASA contract, with no new award or changed programme date.

An Atlas V carrying the Leo 7 mission lifted off from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral at 7:53 p.m. EDT on 29 May 2026, delivering another 29 operational commercial satellites for Amazon's Leo constellation. ULA said the total constellation reached 331 satellites deployed, of which ULA had launched 197 - the majority of Amazon Leo satellites on orbit at that point.

Northrop Grumman disclosed it conducted three company-funded static-fire tests within five months, demonstrating rapid design, manufacturing and verification of advanced solid rocket motors. The company states a strategic investment of over $1bn in its Utah facilities to enable scaled, rapid SRM production for both defence and deep-space missions. Company-funded (rather than customer-funded) testing at this cadence is a capital-allocation signal about expected demand. Not a big event: a corporate feature consolidating previously disclosed test activity, with no contract or customer attached.

An Atlas V carrying the Leo 6 mission lifted off from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral at 8:53:30 p.m. EDT on 27 April 2026, delivering a further 29 operational commercial satellites for Amazon's Leo constellation and bringing the total number of Leo satellites launched by ULA to 168. ULA framed the flight as reinforcing its role in commercial access to space, noting commercial customers make up as much as 50% of its business.

An Atlas V carrying the Leo 5 mission lifted off from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral at 1:46 a.m. EDT on 4 April 2026 with 29 broadband satellites for Amazon's Leo constellation, bringing the total launched by ULA to 139. ULA said the payload was the most satellites and the heaviest payload ever launched on an Atlas V rocket.
